HELP! I NEED TO READ A TEXT BOOK BUT I FORGET WHAT I READ AS SOON AS I READ IT!?

When we have to read the text book, what i do, is find a part that i know i will need to know later, and copy it down as short notes on a seperate peice of paper, that way, im getting just the major points, not trying to cram the entire thing in my head at once.
