Why do dogs like to bark at cats but cats just keep quiet?

There was a stray cat outside my hse and my dog and other dogs in their respective houses were barking at it bt the cat just sit quietly. I also noticed that when i bring my dog into a pet shop, all e dogs inside would bark at mine but the cat in e pet shop would just sit quietly in its cage without any sound. Im just curious though..
